My Clinical Experience

Sports Medicine
I have been assisting the athletic trainer in checking in athletes, cleaning up patient beds, and assisting or leading with the following treatment regimens: rehabilitation, athletic taping, electric stimulation, cryotherapy, thermotherapy, Normatech, and ultrasound. Above is a picture of an ankle I taped, but we tape all sorts of extremities. I gained a lot of experience interacting with various athletes at UCLA and observing how the athletic trainers and volunteer residents deliver care to athletes.
Working as a Medical Assistant
I worked for an urgent care clinic and dermatology clinic, where I performed both front and back office duties. I learned how to navigate the Electronic Medical Record System and manage patient billing while making appointments. The technical skills I learned were performing venipunctures, injections, EKGs, urinalysis, strep tests, COVID tests, and mono tests. I have also assisted the physicians and physician's assistants in minor procedures.
Draw Your Way Through Medicine
This summer fellowship taught me how to explain procedures to patients with a patient-centered approach. An ongoing problem in healthcare is medical miscommunication, where the patient is not fully aware of what the doctor is explaining, and a way I was taught to bypass the disparities in health literacy was through learning how to draw using procreate, and to explain medical procedures using the various layers and by manipulating the features of the app. I have also practiced explaining various procedures while drawing it out in an impromptu manner, and I feel like this app and knowledge would come in handy both in the continuation of my education and as a part of my bedside manner.
Working at Mobile Clinics
As a part of MEDLIFE, I have worked at a variety of mobile clinics. This includes places in Los Angeles, Mexico, and Peru. In partnering with the parent MEDLIFE organization as well as the Refugee Health Alliance, we have been able to assist in providing various kinds of care to patients who lack the means to receive proper healthcare. Various stations we have had include: triage, education, Physician stations, OB/GYN, dentist, and pharmacy. I gained a lot of experience and heard a lot of the stories of the patients and their backgrounds.
