Education

Education has always been an activity of mine I have been passionate about. I love working with children of all ages and watching them grow is very rewarding to me!

1st Year Summer (Edventure More [EDMO])

This was a paid after-school program that I was a part of. I followed EDMO's curriculum and explained it to elementary school students. I led a classroom with 2nd grade students and helped them with their homework, facilitating recess/snack time and other activities, both fun and academic.

1st, 2nd, and 3rd Year Summer (Bruin Surgical Undergraduate Society Pre-med Summer Scholars Program)

During my first year summer, I was a counselor for two cohorts of high school students during a summer program. This program was intended to introduce high schoolers to the field of medicine, teaching them skills such as suturing, intubation, ultrasound, colonoscopy, and more. We used the CASIT technology and simulation machinery to provide high school students with a hands-on experience as they learned more about the medical field. As a counselor, I guided the kids to their stations and ensured they were learning and participating at their stations. We helped give a tour of the campus and had to learn all of the aforementioned skills in order to teach the students. While these programs were a couple of weeks over the summer, we spent the Spring Quarter training. In my 2nd year summer, I became a lead counselor, being in charge of all of the counselors and making sure everyone was adhering to their schedule and that the program was running smoothly. This included having to set up the skills stations before the different groups arrived. As a third-year currently, I am going to be a coordinator for the program and help run the whole program by teaching the new counselors a variety of skills and techniques so they are prepared for their groups. I would also be helping with the logistics behind the program's schedules, coordinating with various of our speakers.

Learning Assistant

As a part of the Learning Assistant Program at UCLA for LS107 (An Upper-Division Genetics Course), I helped explain concepts from lectures to students. We recognize the diversity of students who come to UCLA, as well as the varying amount of education people have received prior to UCLA. The goal of this program is to make learning more equitable and give students the opportunity to receive extra guidance from us in order to succeed in the class and beyond. I also attended seminars to learn various Pedagogy Techniques, including wait time, use of open and closed-ended questions, redirecting questions, showing empathy, and being encouraging of students. I feel like this experience has truly given me more tangible skills with regard to education, which I have employed in the tutoring I do (See Cub Support, Clubs). I also attended content meetings with the TAs and professor to ensure my own understanding of material before explaining it to students taking the course.
